A 5-2 victory over Euxton Villa at the Vestacare Stadium sees us progress to the fourth round of the Macron Cup, as we continue our fantastic run of form during this run of festive fixtures.
A good start to the game was needed and we very almost got that when Adam Dale’s header whistled only inches past the post in the early stages of the first half.
Before going a goal ahead, Euxton had a good chance to open the scoring, forcing an impressive close range stop from Morgan Bacon to keep the scores level. But it did not stay that way for long, just like midweek, Rob Worrall opens the scoring this time with a calm finish from a Muis Bibre Bello cut back.
Lewis Byrne continues his excellent form in front of goal as he doubled our lead after getting on the end of a ball from Adam Dale before tucking it home to double our lead going into the half time break.
Whatever was said to the team by Ben and Carl at half time certainly motivated the players to continue the second half the way that they ended the first as Matty Crothers popped up with another goal to put us three to the good, Lewis Byrne’s shot originally saved by the keeper but Matty was there to place the rebound into the empty Euxton net early in the second half.
Then came a crazy sequence where Euxton were granted a penalty which they converted to reduce the deficit to two goals, before we had a shout of our own less than a minute later when Lewis Byrne was brought down inside of the box, but despite the appeals from our team, the referee deemed no penalty.
However, we would get a penalty after a handball was given against Euxton Villa in the box. Up stepped Matty Crothers, who sent the keeper the wrong way, confidently placing the ball in the bottom right corner. His second of the day and Chadderton’s fourth.
Anyone who decided to leave the game before the 90th minute missed an action-packed ending to proceedings. Euxton Villa were able to pull a goal back from a corner to bring themselves back into the game heading into additional time.
However, Lewis Byrne was able to re-establish our three-goal lead and confirm our place in the hat for the fourth round draw when he got on the end of a fantastic header from Ethan Sutcliffe to make the score 5-2.
Next time out, we turn our attention back to the league as we host Bury on Friday night, in a massive fixture that never fails to provide entertainment value and drama.
