New Mills History

The town of New Mills in Derbyshire has a long and varied history. The earliest evidence of human settlement in the area dates back to the Mesolithic period, around 8,000 years ago. However, the town itself did not really begin to develop until the 14th century, when a corn mill was built on the River Sett. This mill was known as the "New Mylne", and it gave the town its name.

In the 17th century, New Mills began to grow rapidly as a centre for the cotton industry. The town was well-placed to take advantage of the water power provided by the River Sett, and soon there were a number of cotton mills operating in the area. By the 19th century, New Mills was one of the most important cotton towns in the country.

The decline of the cotton industry in the 20th century led to a period of economic hardship for New Mills. However, the town has since reinvented itself as a centre for tourism and light industry. Today, New Mills is a popular destination for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers.
