Near Perfect Bank Holiday Weekend For Old Bristolians Westbury

OBWCC ladies continued an unbeaten start to the 2024 season as all men's sides also won, on a near perfect late May bank holiday weekend for the club.

With the only blip being a rained off ladies game on Sunday, the weekend began with the men's 1st XI, 2nd XI and 3rd XI all winning their league games on Saturday.

Hosting Bath CC 2nd XI at Fortress Failand, the men's 1's lost the toss and were made to bowl first, which turned out to be a very good toss to lose.

Though not losing wickets rapidly, Bath struggled to score quickly against a strong OBWCC bowling line up and were eventually bowled out in the 50th over for just 168, with spinners George Harris (sponsored by Avonmead Accountants) and Connor Crane (sponsored by We Dig Landscaping), picking up seven wickets between them.

An opening batting pair of Ben Jarman (sponsored by New Heat Plumbing) and Ross Whyte (sponsored by Westbury Park Chiropractic) then made light work of the chase, Jarman winning the game with a six in the 27th over as each finished not out on 79 and 78 respectively.

Away against University of Bristol Staff the 2's also lost the toss but were put in to bat, making 177-7 in their 40 overs, in Bristol and District Division Four.

On a pitch with large boundaries, that proved too much for the hosts to chase, with the staff falling 38 runs short off their 40 overs despite not being bowled out.

Back at Fortress Failed the 3's won their toss and chose to bat, which proved a good decision as the side went on to set a target of 306 to win for visitors Claverham.

Opening up Dave Yates and Mike Leonard put on a fantastic 136 together before Leonard was caught for 73, while Yates went on to hit 130 at a strike rate of 111, a personal best score.

Claverham were then bowled out in the final over of the match as Alex Lee took two wickets in two balls to give the 3's maximum points.

On Sunday sadly the ladies match versus Thornbury was rained off, but taking the field in a 100 Cup game on Monday they eased past Huntley away from home, chasing a target of 53 in 52 balls, without losing a single wicket.

Anna Sales top scored with 31* off 26, while captain Maria Fowler made 18* off the same number of balls.

On the men's side the results see the 1st XI move into third in WEPL Bristol & North Somerset despite having not played in week one, while the 2nd XI sit second in B&D Division Four, behind only Bristol Lions CC.

Gaining their first win on Saturday the 3rd XI move into 8th in B&D Division Seven, while the ladies remain top in their league and move into the next round of the 100 Cup.

All in all, a great weekend of cricket for OBWCC.
