Season's Greetings from CHC

CHC December Roundup

Season's Greetings to our community of Vice Presidents and Patrons. On behalf of the CHC committee, we send you the very best wishes for Christmas and the year ahead. Before we break for the year, here's a quick recap on recent weeks.

First Senior England Caps for ex-Cheltenham Player

Jacob Payton, who came all the way up through Cheltenham Junior HC and CHC has had 3 caps for England in their first set of matches during the 2024/25 FiH Pro League. Jacob was part of Cheltenham squads that won the U14 and U16 National Championships, the U16 National Indoor Championships and the team were runners-up in the U18 National Championships. He represented the Men’s 1s in the National League before going on to captain Exeter University and is now playing for Surbiton in the Premier League. He has represented England at U16, U18 and U21. We wish him well.

Update from the men’s section

The men’s 1s have moved up to 3rd position, having won 7, drawn 1, and lost 2.

The men’s 2s remain in 11th position, having won 1 and lost 9.

The men’s 3s are in 6th position, having won 7 and lost 4.

The men’s O35s played the 2nd round of the Masters Cup winning 4-1 against Clifton Robinsons.

The men’s O45s won their 1st round cup match against Banbury following a penalty flick competition having drawn 1-1 in normal time. The score was 3-3 after the first round of flicks but Alex Hay secured the win during sudden death penalty flicks with goalkeeper Giles Rooke being MOTM.

The Wednesdays finished their pre-Christmas fixtures with a mixed match against the Defence Academy, which was enjoyed by all. The team included an Olympic Gold medal showjumper, which was a first! Christmas was celebrated with a small-sided mixed game with the women’s masters, followed by curry.

Update from the women’s section

The women’s 1s have moved up to 5th, having won 4, drawn 1, and lost 5. We are delighted that Gloucestershire Construction Company, Root Group, has entered into partnership agreement with CHC this season, which includes sponsoring our women's 1s.

The women’s 2s have moved down to 11th, having won 1, drawn 5, and lost 4 so far. In a new league this season, they are struggling to secure those three points.

The women’s 3s remain in 2nd position and undefeated, having won 7 and drawn 2. Look out for their top of the table clash against Blockley on Feb 8th!

The women’s 4s sit at the top of the table, having won 6 and drawn 2, with a goal difference of +45! They are doing a great job of building a solid team and fantastic camaraderie, with a group largely made up of women who are coming back to hockey and teenagers who are experiencing adult hockey for the first time.

The women's O35s enjoyed a stunning 7-1 victory over Bath in November, in the U35 cup. They then faced a very experienced Clifton side this weekend just past. Sadly, it was not their day, with an impressive Clifton winning 4-2. The CHC girls really came into their own as the game progressed, winning the second half 2-1. It's a shame games aren't longer!

The women entered a team into the Indoor West Finals and enjoyed a convincing win over Yeovil before meeting tougher opposition in Firebrands (4-0 loss) and Bristol Uni (5-3 loss). Overall it was a great runout for the girls and some good experience for the youngsters. Charli particularly enjoyed the fact that she had coached all the younger players as they passed through CJHC.

Youth update

The U16 Girls Cobras (A team) finished the first element of the Tier 1 Supra League in third place in their zone, so they will play Bristol Firebrands in the first round of the Tier 1 Plate in Feb. They also participated in the West Indoor Finals finishing in 2nd place with wins against Bristol Firebrands and Isca and a draw with Taunton Vale.

The U16 Girls Cheetahs (B team) currently sit in 4th place in their West Tier 2 League after a number of pre-Christmas matches were postponed. In the Avon Junior Hockey League, they sit in 2nd place on goal difference.

The U16 Boys currently top their West Tier 2 league with 4 wins out of 4 without conceding a goal. They have reached Round 3 of the Tier 2 Cup and play Oxford Hawks on Sun 12 Jan. At the West Indoor, they faced tough opposition but the experience was a good one.

The U18 Girls were one of only 2 clubs to participate in the West Indoor Finals. They played well in spite of having had very little practice but Clifton Robinsons were able to draw on a strong contingent of local players, who had been well drilled.

Teams from the U18 Girls, U16 Girls and U16 Boys will represent the Club at the Indoor Hockey UK Championships over the festive break. A great opportunity to gain more indoor experience.

At their penultimate training session, the U16 Girls enjoyed pizza, a quiz and a skill challenge session to celebrate Christmas.
