I joined Cobham in September 2022 as a senior - something I was very happy about as it gave me the chance to play more lacrosse outside of school - and went to trial for the Spanish national team shortly after that in January 2023. Although I was extremely nervous at first, everyone was incredibly welcoming, and I soon felt like part of the family! Three training weekends later, I was selected to represent the senior team at the ELF Easter Tournament in Lloret de Mar, Spain, which was an amazing experience, and was then chosen to form part of the squad for the U21 European Championships in Prague. It was a huge honour to be there representing my country – getting to wear the Spain kit and hear the national anthem before every game was surreal – and, after the tournament, I became even more motivated to build lacrosse’s popularity in Spain and to work on my game to give us the greatest possible chance of competing with the top teams in the future, especially at the Olympics.
Balancing playing for Spain with my studies (I am in Year 12 at St Paul’s Girls’ School) has been difficult, but I have had plenty of support from everyone around me and always look forward to the training weekends, especially since the weather in Madrid is usually much nicer than in London!
I am currently hoping to be selected to go to the Women’s European Championships (with the senior team) in Portugal in July. Prior to this, however, I am very excited to be playing for Spain at the Eurolax Sixes Cup at the end of February, where I’ll get the chance to play sixes at the highest level, which is particularly exciting given sixes’ growing relevance as the Olympic modality of lacrosse. Before then, I am very much looking forward to the last few games of the season with Cobham and hopefully finishing the season on a high!
