Canada regained ODI (One Day International) status in 2023 and is now officially placed in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings at the 17th spot.
The regaining of ODI status in 2023 and promotion to Division Two ensures that Canada, for the next four years, will compete in a significant number of high-quality international 50-over matches within Canada and around the world.
Canada has a fair chance to qualify for the 2027 Men’s ODI World Cup 16 years after their last appearance. To prepare for this opportunity Canada will consistently have to produce players to compete at the highest level over the next four years. All Canadian Provincial Cricket boards have to take on the responsibility to provide a high level of competition and player development for cricketers throughout the country in order to have a pool of players to select from. Sustainable development plans must be in place throughout the country to produce players for the long run.
With the return of the ODI status Canada is placed in the ICC World Cricket League Two. Canada is grouped with Namibia, Netherlands, Scotland, Nepal, Oman, UAE and USA. The league runs for a 4-year cycle, 2023-2027, and will lead up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. Canada, after 4 matches, currently sits at the top of the table.
For Canada to make it to the 2027 ODI World Cup, they will first have to earn a spot in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup qualifier, they can do this by finishing in the Top 4 of League 2. The bottom 4 teams will still have a chance in the Qualifier Play-offs.
