Grampound Road Cricket Club was founded in the 1930s. However our historian has discovered that cricket matches were actually taking place as long ago as 1881. Contrary to rumours I can confirm that none of our current squad were involved in that game.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of those early players the game of cricket thrived and Grampound Road became the centre of cricket for the local area. Competitive matches against neighbouring villages were eagerly anticipated as local pride took centre stage. This was intensified as the big teams such as Truro, St Austell and Penzance visited. It seems as if little has changed.

Such was the popularity of Cricket within the area that the Club soon began to outgrow it's facilities. An adjacent field was aquired on a long lease and so began the unenviable task of converting an agricultural field into one of the best wicket in the County. Such was the success of their endeavours that the wicket has been used for a number of county fixtures, league finals as well as hosting the MCC for a bi annual fixture.

The Clubs growth can be put down to it's confidence in promoting youth and women's cricket. In the 1980s it was recognised that there were very few opportunities for young players to join a club unless they were already an established player. The Club wanted to reach out to all children of whatever ability an encourage them to pick up a bat and ball. So was born the famous Monday night ball skills events. Today as many as 70 young people from the surrounding area turn up on a Monday evening and benefit from the instruction of our senior players. 

In 2014 the Club's Patron. Sir Tim Rice officially opened our new pavilion. This was the culmination of a 10 year project which saw many ups and downs. Starting from scratch with very little money in the bank, the members set about raising what seemed an impossible amount of money to build the facility that we now enjoy. There were many occasions when it would have been easy to have admitted defeat, but thanks to some very generous donations, the support of the ECB and the amazing efforts of our members the project came to fruition.

Today we we are the proud custodians of one of the best sporting facilities in the County and the envy of many a club. However we are not just about cricket. We enjoy sharing our facilities with as many local organisations and businesses as possible.

Throughout the club, Grampound Road CC’s ideals reflect sports core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. And recent market research has overwhelmingly shown that the club comes across as being warm and friendly, providing good quality sport for all.

Whilst we are ambitious, we also have a strong family ethos, derived from a commitment to youth sport for all age groups. 

All this is underwritten by a diverse sponsor base, at a variety of different levels, which aids the club’s financial stability and adds value to our audience.

We are extremely proud of our women's teams. Grampound Road Cricket Club was one of the first Clubs to embrace women's cricket. Such has been the success that our women have won the county league two years out of the last three, but more importantly they have established themselves as a key part of our club for many years to come.

The pavilion has become the community centre for the village with many organisations using it for their events. We are delighted that so many local people who don't necessarily share our passion for cricket, but do regularly visit us.

With membership and crowd attendances rising, we have ambitious plans to continue to develop the infrastructure at the club. Naturally, we want to support our sponsors and build them in to our club on a strategic level, allowing any partner to benefit from our ever-improving facilities, expanding audience and our community involvement.

So where do we go from here. We have ambitious plans to continue improving our facilities and provide a safe environment for our young people to play cricket. We want our teams to be successful on the field of play, supporting them to play the highest levels of their ability. We want the local community to continue to use our facilities and provide them with a location they can be proud of. Above all we want to do justice to those early cricketers who put so much into creating the Club we have today.
