Training

We have a new coach for our Junior section for 2024/25. Ant Raisbury is an experienced coach, player, and umpire with England Hockey Level 2 coaching qualification.

Our junior section offers training for children of primary and secondary school ages.

All abilities from the age of 7-years-old are welcome to come along and learn some hockey skills with MHHC. The first training session is free of charge.

During the hockey season (September to Easter) we train every week on the fantastic all-weather pitch at Robert Smyth Academy in Market Harborough. We also run additional junior Summer hockey training sessions from Easter until the May half-term.

Junior hockey training takes place on Wednesdays at 17:30 – 19:00. The training at our junior sessions is specifically designed for different age-groups, concentrating on developing the skills required to play and enjoy our fabulous game. 

At Robert Smyth Academy there is ample parking and sticks are provided if you don’t have your own. You just need trainers with good grip, shin-pads and mouth guards.

There is no charge for the first training session, to allow players to decide if they wish to continue, and discounts are available for multiple family members.

New members are welcome all year round!

There is no junior training during the Leicestershire school holidays and half-terms. The last session before Christmas is Wednesday 11 December 2024 and training will begin again on Wednesday 6 January 2025.

Eight months of winter training (September to Easter) is included with Full junior and concessionary membership for only £20 per month. Junior non-members, and casual members, are charged £8 per session.

There are additional Summer Training sessions running throughout the warmer months. You can find further details on the Summer Training page. All Summer sessions are charged per session, with reduced fees for members and concessions. See the Club Membership page for details.

Training for U16s and U18s is during the Senior sessions. Senior training is open to all aged 13-years-old and above.

There is the opportunity for all youngsters to play in local tournaments on Sundays throughout the season; depending on the age range of junior players each season we can field teams of under 8s, under 10s, under 12s, under 14s, under 16s and under 18s. Players are not charged to play in U8–U12s Sunday tournaments. For older children there is the chance to play regularly for the Badgers team.

In previous seasons the MHHC Badgers played on Saturdays in the Northamptonshire Two Counties Badgers League. The Badgers League is a good introduction to full sized hockey, and is competitive and friendly. Badgers teams are made up of nine junior players, and two supporting adults, playing 11-a-side on a full size pitch. Junior players must be under 16-years-old, most are aged between 13- and 16-years-old but some as young as 11-years-old have been part of the squad.

Which membership to choose?

Junior memberships (U13 and below) are available for players in the U8s, U10s & U12s (school years 2-7). Concession memberships (U18) are available for players in the U14s, U16s & Badgers (school year 8 and above).

Full club membership for Junior and Concession players cost £20 per month (£120 per season) and includes all training from September through to Easter, with discounted match fees. The Full membership fees are split over 6 monthly instalments.

Alternatively, you can pay-as-you-go with a Casual Junior or Concession membership where training costs £8 per session.

If you train and play regularly, a Full membership is more cost effective, offering substantial savings over a Casual membership. 

Match Fees:

Match fees are £6 per game for Full Concession and £3 per game for Full Junior members, or £9 per game for Casual Concession and £6 per game for Casual Junior members. Junior tournaments are free of charge.

Junior Summer hockey training and our annual Intraclub Summer League will be running through April and May 2024. The men's Summer League matches will be running from May to August 2024.

2024 MHHC Intra-club Mixed Sumer League

The MHHC Intra-club Summer League is back! Six weeks of fun starting on Thursday 18 April running to Thursday 23 May. 

The MHHC Summer League is open to all aged 13 and over and consists of mixed mini-league matches (5- or 6-a-side) played over 6 weeks at Robert Smyth Academy.

Players must sign up to play, and will be assigned to a team made up of a mix of players from across the club. Players will be in the same team for the duration of the tournament. Team allocations will be sent out to all registered players before the first matches.

£6 per session (£5 for U18, full time student, unemployed or retired)
