Our Ladies 1s faced Newcastle 2’s in the first round of the cup on Sunday. After suffering a very uncharacteristic loss the day before it was safe to say everyone was raring to go with a point to prove! It was a strong Newcastle team who transferred the ball well from defence to midfield but Norton maintained high pressure and a dogged work rate.
We were rewarded with a wonder goal from Kait on her reverse stick mid-way through the first half which gave everyone a confidence boost.
In the second half we came out strong however conceded a goal against the run of play. Despite this we continued with a high press and positive mentality. With 4 minutes to go we gained a short corner and with a great set piece from Kait slipping the balling to Gaynor on the left we went 2-1 up. It was a nervy end to the game with the final whist being blown and a short corner to follow but we defended it strong to advance to the next round.
Gaynor was awarded MOM for a stellar performance and I didn’t want to let Ella fly solo on the green card for the weekend so I wiped out a member of the opposite team as well as myself in the process!
