Old Wulfs 1st XI 2-3 Telford & Wrekin 3rd XI
A late home push back saw the 1st face another top of the table team in Telford & Wrekin 3rd. Having thrashed us in the pre-season friendly a fortnight ago, we knew it would be a tough game, and so it proved.
Old Wulfs started nervily, coughing up possession a bit easily all over the pitch. And early short corner goal for Telford was the wake-up call, and Old Wulfs grew into the the half. Having created some great space and pressuring the defence, Old Wulfs were unfortunate not to have got more for their efforts, before dropping further behind to a counter attack. However, showing resilience and determination, they pressed on, and we're rewarded when Archie Harris pounced in the D just before half time.
The second half saw Old Wulfs start brightly, and work on what we discussed at the interval. The game was played at a high pace throughout, and Old Wulfs had the best of the attacking play. Still no goals though, as chances went the wrong side of the post, or drew top-notch saves from the Telford keeper.
The persistence paid off, though, with a great counter-attack and the ever-presnent Archie arriving to bundle the ball in again. Game on.
Some tempers frayed as it was clear Telford were having a tougher time than they expected, and Sam A got a green card for some strong complaints about the character of a Telford forward...who also got a card for having bundled him over.
The game opened up as legs tired, but Old Wulfs kept running hard and believed in the win. It wasn't to be, with a cruel third going in for Telford with ten minutes to play. The pace became frenetic, but ultimately the clock ran out.
Another sterling performance from Old Wulfs 1s, and another loss that should probably have been a draw as a fairer reflection of the match. Next week sees a visit to fellow promoted team Sutton 4s, and a chance to get some points on the board.
