A lovely spring day in Essex for cricket. A third consecutive win of the toss for the 5s put their opponents Wanstead and Snaresbrook into bat first. An early wicket from Ben Holland was promising. However through the next two partnerships of 71 and 92 Wanstead built a healthy score. A flurry of late over wickets from skipper Will Bowden (giving him figures of 3-25) slowed the scoring a bit but a challenging target of 184 was set.
A steady first 20 overs with just 2 wickets lost and 80 runs scored gave the 5s a solid base off which to push on in the second half of the innings. But with some tight Wanstead bowling including the loss of 5 more wickets they couldn’t quite keep up the run rate and ended up 18 runs short. The Shenfield innings was anchored by a fine 55 from Ciaran Dunleavy that included three top drawer 6s and a supporting 32 from Andrew Stark. Another u13 Joey Newbould made his adult debut. Many thanks to Neil Holland for doing all the umpiring during which he had the rare opportunity to signal a 5 as the ball hit the wicket keepers helmet that was on the field. Many thanks also to everyone for creating another cracking tea that included chip butties!!
