Frequently Asked Questions

Where does TCP practice?

  • Classes are held on Lake Phalen in (St. Paul / Maplewood). 
  • Teams meet at the Beach House by the water.
  • Our boathouse is on the backside of the building.


What to wear to practice?

  • Shorts, Long or short sleeve synthetic T-shirt (depending on weather)
  • We paddle barefoot, but please wear flip-flops at the parking lot and boat launch


What do I need to bring to practice?

  • Flip Flops, a Towel, a spare set of cloth, a water bottle


Where do I drop off my kids and park my car?

  • You can park your car or drop off your kids at the Beach House.
  • Feel free to stay and watch your kids or use the time to walk around the lake.


What equipment do I need?

  • TCP has single and team kayaks and canoes, paddles, and PFDs.
  • Athletes in the high-performance program typically have their own equipment.


What happens if I come late?

  • We will lock the boathouse when ready to go on the water. 
  • Please try to arrive 10 min before practice begins.


What if I can't make it to practice?

  • It's OK to miss a practice or race day. 
  • Please inform your coach beforehand if you can't make it.
  • Please use the smartphone app TEAM Chat to contact your coach or teammates.


What happens when it rains?

  • We always try to hold practice, even if it is rainy.
  • Coaches will closely monitor the weather, and at the first sign of lightning, all members will be directed off the water.
  • Coaches will send cancellation notices via TEAMO Chat if weather conditions are unsafe to paddle.


What are club races?

  • Our beginner program, the NorthStar Paddle League, includes three races that will be held on Saturday mornings.
  • There are no extra fees!
  • The races are friendly competitions between beginners from programs at Endurance United and The Loppet Foundation.
  • We hold short races and fun exercises. Bring friends or family members to watch.


What is a regatta?

  • A regatta is a competition between different clubs at the national level.
  • Most regattas require road trips. We travel as a team and bring a trailer with our single- and team-boats.
  • Separate travel fees apply. 
  • A typical racecourse has 9 lanes and is 200m, 500m, or 1000m long. At some events, we also have 2k or 5k long-distance races.
