Cambridge University Hockey Club, better known as CUHC, was founded in 1890. In 2003, the traditionally separate Men’s and Women’s clubs merged to form a single club. We are now recognised as the biggest and most successful amalgamated University sports club in Cambridge.CUHC runs four Men’s and four Women’s teams. Both our 1st XIs hold a ‘Full Blue’ status. Our Men’s Blues and our Women’s Blues compete at the highest level of regional hockey in both domestic and inter-university competitions.
The Varsity Matches that take place each year against Oxf*rd are the best and most exciting part of all sport at Cambridge, and that's no different for hockey. The Blues Varsity Match has been played since 1890 and it is the highlight of the hockey calendar each year, taking place at Southgate Hockey Centre at the end of Lent Term. In 2024, the Women's Blues came away with an astounding 4-0 victory, while the men unfortunately came away on the wrong end of a tight 1-0 match.
Two weeks before Blues Varsity is the 2s/3s/4s Varsity matches, better known as "BDotY" (Best Day of the Year). Each year the location alternates between Oxf*rd and Cambridge. A full day of six matches of hockey is followed by one of the best social events of the year. BDotY took place in Oxf*rd in 2024, where the Nomads (the Women's 2s) were the only team to come away with a win, so we're looking to get some more wins on the board as we return home in 2025.
Alongside CUHC, Cambridge is also home to a vibrant college hockey scene. College Hockey is a more social, less-competitive way to play hockey at Cambridge that is open to all levels of players in the University. College Hockey is a great way to get involved in hockey for complete beginners, and it's also a great way for more experienced players to get some more time on the pitch playing. College Hockey is great fun and generally demands less time commitment than one of the CUHC teams.
CUHC are always delighted to meet new members! If you are a new fresher coming to Cambridge in the Autumn or already studying at Cambridge and wish to play competitive hockey at university level, we would love to hear from you.
If you're looking to start with the club at the start of the academic year, either as a new or returning student, then come along to preseason if you're around or look out for Fresher's Trials during Fresher's week. If you're looking to join midway through the year then get in touch through our contact page. More information for both can be found below.
We will do our best to get back to you as soon as possible.
