About Harpenden Hockey Club Juniors

Welcome to the home of Harpenden Hockey Club Juniors.

Over the years our junior section has grown steadily to become one of the largest centres for junior hockey in Hertfordshire. Currently we have over 180 members.

We run training sessions in according to age group on Sundays and Mondays from September until Easter. Our youngest age group, U8s takes boys and girls in years 1,2 and 3 at school. This section and all the girls sections train on Sundays. The boys sections meet on Monday evenings. Further information on timings can be found on the junior training page of the website.

All our junior sections also participate in junior competitions run during the year by the Hertfordshire league and the East Junior League. We endeavour to run as many teams as required such that all juniors who attend regularly can participate in competitive competitions irrespective of ability. At the end of the season we enter one team per section to the Hertfordshire Country Championships.

Juniors over the age of 13 are also encouraged to train with, and play for, the senior teams when it is felt appropriate.

Each age group is led by a qualified coach under the guidance of our Head of Performance, with plenty of willing volunteers from the senior teams helping the coaches out at the training sessions.

Many of our members go on to be selected for the Herts Junior Development and Junior Academy training centres, with some playing representative hockey at higher levels.

Further information can be found on the Junior Training page, however if your child is interested in playing hockey please contact our Junior Coordinator (harpendenhcjuniors@gmail.com). Everyone is welcome regardless of ability and we are happy for your child to attend up to three sessions to try it out before joining to ensure they are happy.

New Junior Members

For any new juniors considering joining this season, you are welcome to have 3 free taster sessions before committing to the annual subscription.

If any new players do not own a stick we will lend them one until they buy their own.

All juniors should have a mouth guard and shin pads.

Club Kit

Club colours are a white shirt with navy blue trim, navy blue shorts or skort and navy blue socks. All members are required to have a club shirt as these will be needed for matches.

We are confirming arrangements for sale this season of the club shirts, and other club clothing....so watch this space

Equipment Required

Footwear should be appropriate for Astroturf, however Astroturf football trainers are not recommended due to the lack of protection they provide.

Hockey shin pads must be worn for both training and matches and a fitted mouth guard is advised. For older players a left hand protective glove is also recommended.

Each member is advised to have their own stick, however these are available to borrow if required. The table below outlines the recommended hockey stick length in inches and cm based on height of the hockey player. Complete guide can be found here
