Mens 2nds vs Marton Furness 2

Morpeth 2’s travelled to Marton Furness after a week of worry, could they get a full 11 out. Last night things were looking rosie, on 12, Dean and Yuri were joining us and CJ had volunteered to join the band for the weekend also. This morning the team lost Craggs to the Covid, meaning we were back down to the 10.7 players, which at one point this week, to Captain Read, seemed like a luxury. The .7 player being Nathanial…… a man who literally refuses to gather medical, experienced and knowledgable opinion on his injuries!!

So, Morpeth 2’s started the game with 10.7 players and to be fair they started quite strong; connecting with team mates and creating half chances. After a period of decent play, Ross found himself running into the top right hand side of the D unleashing a powerful shot inside the far post, 1-0.

After, Furness raised their game a little and found some joy through some of their own half chances, one of which involved a bouncing bomb across Morpeth’s D from the right…… the bouncer alluded several players from both teams before landing at the last player at the far post….. who wore black, 1-1.

Morpeth heads got back in the game and Kendall received the ball around the 25, half back to goal…… out of the corner of his eye he spotted the one legged Nathanial making a B-line for the far post….. without a seconds thought, he played a pass Glen Hoddle would’ve been proud of towards the far post where Nathanial, whilst hopping, found himself ahead of his defender sending the ball into the goal. 2-1 up and well deserved. Half time.

The second half started with a flurry of pressure from the opposition. Some half chances were created and a couple of goal bound attempts ended up outside Morpeth’s far post, without a touch. Alas, for Furness, none of these were converted.

Morpeth grafted their socks off and continued to battle for every ball. Some more good play down the right hand side led to Ross finding himself in the oppositions D, surrounded by defenders Ross decided Hukin was the best placed player to take advantage of the situation, not himself (a monumental moment, the team couldn’t be prouder of Ross for this angelic moment of clarity)…… laying a slightly awkward pass off, Hukin used his experience to pass the ball into the net from the pen spot. 3-1.

Morpeth continued to battle hard and whilst the game went a little end to end, there were no more clear cut chances for either team. Huge respect to all those players turning out for the 2’s today, a fantastic effort and a well deserved win.

MOM Nathanial for being slightly better on one leg than the normal 2😘

DOD Kendall for having a 2 min interlude.

Captain happy, team happy, we roll on
