We’ve come a long way since the Club was founded in 1954 with its home on Saffron Walden Common and only two teams!
The Club then established its home ground at the Anglo-American Playing Fields, sharing the ground with Saffron Walden Cricket Club until 1994 when the transition of league hockey required playing on an artificial surface.
After a long search, we raised funds jointly with Newport Grammar School (now Joyce Frankland Academy) and put down an Astro turf pitch on land next to the school.
We were also able to build a brand new Club House; The Wawn Pavilion, in 2004 and for the past 18 years this building has served us well.
We’re very fortunate that the Academy has just built a new multi-use artificial surface, so we now have two pitches. Great news for the Club, as we can now play all our home games at our Newport ground. Logistically, however, this creates its own challenges.
It’s traditional to provide teas and hospitality after matches. From Season 2022/2023 we‘ll have approximately 60 people coming into the Club House after matches and don’t currently have the space or facilities to manage this number of people at one time.
The solution is a complete refurbishment of the existing building; allowing us to accommodate our members, and also provide an important community hub for the school and other local clubs to enjoy for generations to come.
I hope you will help us with our appeal to make our Club House a welcoming hub for Saffron Walden Hockey Club and the local community.
Any donation, whether from an individual or business, would be very welcome and we have sponsorship packages to fit all pockets.
