Men’s 1s weather storm to win as Men’s 8s stay unbeaten

Blueharts Men’s 1s survived a buffeting by Storm Darragh and the challenge of Upminster to win 2-0 on Saturday and go into the East Premier Division winter break in fifth place.

Seb Walton-Adams put the Hitchin side ahead latching onto an accurate long ball from Danny Fair and shooting into the roof of the net.

Graham Burr doubled the lead after scoring from a short corner but as Upminster rallied, goalkeeper Alex Ford made a number of brilliant stops to ensure the three points stayed at Lucas Lane.

The 1s are level on points with third-placed Bedford and Ipswich in fourth going into the four-week break.

The Ladies 1s were held 1-1 at Sudbury in East Division One South, with Gabby Sillis scoring their goal and Annie Nicholls putting in an outstanding shift.

A goal five minutes from the finish saw the Ladies 2s succumb to Hertford 1-0, despite a player-of-the match display from Sophie Featherby.

The Ladies 3s started well against their Hertford opponents but two momentary lapses in concentration cost them two goals in quick succession in the first period.

A well-executed short corner routine saw Izzy Rutter pull one back and the 3s were also indebted to brilliant penalty flick save from Sam Coughlan-Flood.

Despite outplaying Hertford, the 3s couldn’t find the equaliser as they went down 2-1.

The Men’s 3s ended the first half of the season on a high, battling back from 3-1 down to beat Potters Bar 3s 4-3.

Goals came from Ashley Hammond with two, Ben Keegan and Ben Hammond as the 2s went five points clear in second place in East Division 3 South West.

The 3s are two places above the 4s after they suffered a controversial defeat to bottom side Cheshunt 4-3 in a bad-tempered match.

Dan Harvey, Darren Mackintosh and Rory Williams scored the goals which looked like giving the 4s a 3-3 draw only to concede in the final seconds.

The Ladies 4s and Men’s 5s’ matches were victims of Storm Darragh but the Ladies 6s made light of the conditions as they walloped Broxbourne 5-0.

There were two goals apiece from Imogen Ryden and Helen Ferguson and one from Izzy Marshall, while Teah Richardson won the player-of-the-match honours.

The Men’s 6s matched the Ladies as they hit five without reply past Welwyn Garden City, with Paul Krishman and Gavin Bidgood scoring twice and Mark Russell once.

The Men’s 7s drew a blank against Potters Bar, going down 2-0, while it was a similar story for the Ladies 7s, who lost 4-0 to Hertford.

But it was another successful Saturday for the unbeaten Men’s 8s, Thomas Flinn scoring five of their eight against Luton Town – James Moore and William Michie with the others.

The match was also notable for a rare assist from skipper Rob Trotter as his side enjoy their festive break three points clear at the top of the table.
