Blueharts Men’s 1s collected their first win of the East Premier Division season at the third time of asking on Saturday with a 2-1 win at Broxbourne.
Goals from Harvey Walton-Adams and Chris Gadsden put the Blues in control although the home side pulled one back just before the interval.
Midfielders Ethan Gaunt and Alex Krekis were in dominant second-half form - but the third goal wouldn’t come and the 1s were given a scare when Broxbourne hit the post late on before the Blues held on for the win.
The Ladies 1s maintained their unbeaten start to the season in East Division 1 South with a 1-1 draw in a competitive game against Old Loughtonians at Lucas Lane.
The visitors took a first-half lead through a scrappy goal after an opening in which Blueharts strongly.
But the 1s deservedly hit back after the break, a brilliant pass from Rebecca Woodgate being expertly finished by Jay Livermore.
Both sides pushed for a winner - however outstanding keeping and resilient defending ensured there were no more goals but there was an excellent display from player-of-the-match Gabrielle Sillis.
Debutant goalkeeper Cameron Gregg was outstanding for the Men’s 2s against Hertford 1s but his efforts were in vain as his side were unluckily beaten 2-1.
Paul Buckland opened the scoring but the 2s – despite being in the ascendency – were hauled back level before half-time.
Despite a string of fine saves from Gregg and some Blues dominance at the other end, Hertford grabbed an unlikely winner just before the end.
The Ladies 2s were beaten 2-0 at Bishops Stortford but the 3s did collect a point in a 1-1 draw against their Stortford opponents. Izzy Rutter opened the scoring with a powerful thunderbolt shot on goal taking the 3s 1-0 up. The visitors shortly equalised from a well-executed short corner. Player of the match went to Nicky Turnbull who was kept busy in defence. Overall, a positive team effort from this ‘new look’ ladies’ thirds team who remain undefeated and ready to face Bishop Stortford 5s next Saturday at home.
There was a thrilling 4-4 draw for the Men’s 3s against recently-demoted Hertford, with Ashley Hammond, Barry Hann, man-of-the-match Matt Maylin and Oscar Hammond on target.
There were also eight goals in the Ladies 4s’ match – however they went down at Berkhamsted & Hemel Hempstead, despite a determined player-of-the-match performance from Aimee Bartley.
Goals came from Lydia Buckland, Niamh Krishman and Lyla Thomson-Wells.
An Izzy Marshall strike earned the Ladies 5s a 1-1 draw against Letchworth 3s – and it also finished 1-1 as the Men’s 5s picked up their first point of the season against Luton Town.
Blueharts keeper Jack Jones was in superlative form in the first half but couldn’t prevent Luton from taking the lead.
However, Blueharts rallied after the break and were rewarded with a Pete Mitchell equaliser – the 5s had the chance to win it late on but were denied by a penalty stroke save from the Luton keeper.
One of the performances of the day came from the Men’s 6s who put ten past Hertford 5s – the prolific Paul Krishman scoring four, Gav Bidgood and John Russell two apiece and one each from Charlie Moore and Mark Russell.
The side’s younger players shone throughout, especially the man-of-the-match Harri Flinn.
The Ladies 6s went down 3-0 to Bishops Stortford, while the 7s were beaten 5-1 by Saffron Walden but did have the consolation of a goal from Faye Lindsay and a great defensive performance from Annabelle Holder.
An inexperienced Men’s 7s side were beaten 4-2 by Bedford Vets, despite goals from Stuart Gadsden and Andy Devey – in a match which saw the debuts of 13-year-old Harry White in goal and 15-year-old Joshua Bell.
Despite the final score, this was a promising and spirited performance from the 7s.
The Men’s 8s still have not tasted defeat after drawing 1-1 at top-of-the-table Bedford 7s – Tom Payne scoring the goal in a game in which the dominant Blueharts side racked up 15 penalty corners.
The side were also indebted to emergency goalkeeper Charlie Baxter who stepped in and made a vital low save in the first half.
