As the season draws to a close the women faced Sevenoaks at home in their last game. All matches in the league starting at 2pm, the only thing riding on the match for the women was the ability to finish in 5th place with a win.
The women knew that the match against Sevenoaks would be a tough game but the points were there for the taking and the game could go either way as Sevenoaks were only one place ahead in the table. Magpies were keen to finish on a high and take all 3 points. The game started with Magpies passing the ball around well and holding well defensively. A missed opportunity from and well struck short corner for Magpies with not long to go. However no goals were scored for either teams in the first quarter.
The second quarter was much the same with both teams biding their time being patient and passing the ball around. Sevenoaks were pressing high on free hits and making it hard for Magpies to get the ball out from the back. As the half time whistle went it was still 0-0. Magpies still remained calm and confident that goals were coming after having chances in the first half.
The third quarter was much of the same neither teams breaking the deadlock, leaving the home crowd nervous and wanting some goals!
At the start of the last quarter the crowds finally got wait they had been waiting for and well worked team goal! The ball was worked down the pitch and a ball across to Fran on the half volley smashed home to take the home team 1-0 up! Now the floodgates had been opened and Magpies didn't waste anytime only five minutes later a great ball from the half way line through to young Maya saw her with only the goalie to beat! Maya coolly ran into the D and managed to smash the ball past the goalies right foot and into the goal, 2-0! Unfortunately Sevenoaks responded shortly after with a goal of their own, 2-1. Magpies held out until the final whistle keeping the final score to a 2-1 victory.
Magpies were thrilled to finish the season with a win, and finish in the 5th position in the top half of the table. The team would like to wish the girls going off to university all the best for next year and to remember that they are only 'out on loan', we will see them when they return!
It is also worth noting our thanks and congratulations to Ann Hopkins who umpired us on Saturday in her last ever national league game. We are truly honoured that you chose us for your last game, and we all wish you the very best for the future after hanging up your whistle.
