It has been a number of weeks since the last League game and on a very cold, late afternoon in January, Magpies 7 took to the pitch with their usual confidence and self-belief. They welcomed new team member Ian who is a “new to hockey player” and very keen to learn. In this respect, he has definitely joined the right team.
It was obvious from the start of play that the teams were very evenly matched. The first half was a slight advantage to Ipswich with the Magpies defence lacking the continuity of the first half of the season.
However, Goalkeeper Noah had turned up with his “sparkling skills” helmet on and duly kept Magpies in the game on a number of occasions. So, it was very unfortunate that a confusion of missed tackles led to a penalty stroke. Buoyant Ipswich stepped forward. At first it looked as if Noah had succeeded in keeping the ball out, but it wasn’t to be. Somehow the ball spun tantalizingly close to Noah’s glove but disappointingly and before he could retrieve it, the ball crept over the line for the first goal.
After half time the balance swung in Magpies’ favour and the team spent the majority of the time peppering the Ipswich goal without success. It was as though a goal would never come when suddenly a Harris charge down the right wing gave him the opportunity to strike at the goal. It was a very clever shot as it made its way behind the Ipswich keeper and onto the backboard.
At this point in the match, it looked quite likely that Magpies would strike again but Ipswich rallied and succeeded in being awarded a number of penalty corners late into the match. Once again, Noah was there to cover but it was the sheer overwhelming pressure from the Ipswich forwards that led to the winning goal.
There were some excellent performances and it would be unfair to name some and not others. The spectators agreed that with the personal improvements in all the players, a win is not far off …… and Ian said he “really enjoyed the game”!
Our thanks go to James, David and Richard for their on-pitch wisdom, help and support. To Rae for the admin and David for the refreshments. Our thanks also to all the parents, friends and spectators who braved the cold right up to the end.
