Our home match was played during the morning in nice, fine weather and we fielded a squad of fourteen players. City began the game by swiftly sending the ball into our half, yet we had some seriously good defenders in Julie Davy, Theresa Griffin, Daphne Beckett and Gillian Stokes who all played hard throughout the match. Some great passes were sent to the forwards and Rosie Stennett raced up the pitch and scored our first goal. City were quick to retaliate and were awarded a short corner. Young Bethany Whipps ran out and blocked their strike and Peg Bridges made some great saves. City did score a goal but, fortunately, it hit a foot on the way in so was disallowed. Alison Priest, tackling well in the centre, sent a great pass to Maisy Woolward who struck the ball into City’s circle where Jo Meyer was ready to smash it into the goal. Soon, we were awarded a short corner where Amelia Stott struck the ball to Shirley McAllen who sent the ball home.
At half time, we were elated with the score and skipper, Shirley McAllen, was pleased with our effort. So, the second half began with some fast running and good passing by both sides. City didn’t seem to tire and were awarded a couple of short corners which were blocked by our defence, particularly Rosie Baynes who tackled well. However, we kept our width and young Becky Hollidge could be seen racing up the right wing, trying to get past City’s defenders. It was a real team effort to block City’s forwards and thwart their attempts at goal. During a great push to get the ball into City’s circle, one of our forwards sent an airborne ball towards their goal, and we watched with bated breath as Rosie Stennett raised her stick which brushed the ball as it flew into the goal. The umpire had a think about what had just happened and awarded us the goal!
