Magpies 2s welcomed Cambridge 1s to the Nest on a surprisingly warm Saturday afternoon. The team had been delt a blow by losing both the Hipwell brothers, however they welcomed Billy Flatt and Archie Kinsman back from the 1st team.
The unusually youthful looking 2nd team line up started the game on the back foot. The opposition clearly were playing to their plan and some neat interplay was allowing them to cut through Harleston with far too much ease.
The away team played to their strengths constantly finding their stronger players whilst Magpies were unable to target their weaker ones. The away team cemented their dominance with three first half goals. A smart piece of skill and finish was sandwiched between two well worked short corner goals. Harleston were finding it tough to create clear cut opportunities although a brilliant ball into the D from defender Andrew Bedwell was narrowly deflected by a diving Andrew Johnson. Just before half time a well worked move down the right wing was calmly finished by Josh Means to reduce the arrears going in to half time.
The second half proceeded similar to the first. Magpies did start to pass the ball better and with more intent but another short corner goal and a field goal pegged back any momentum they had. The young team however battled until the end and continued to look to play good hockey whenever they could. They were at least treated to one of the most wonderful open goal misses however when a Cambridge player managed to round the keeper and with the goal at his mercy managed to push the ball wide from 10 yards out for what surely will be miss of the season.
Final score 5-1 loss
Magpies will regroup for their final game before the Christmas break looking to end on a high with a good performance against UEA 1s.
