On Saturday 30th November Harleston Magpies Women's 1st team travelled down to Surbiton HC for their final game before the Christmas break.
Expecting a close game, the women started the first quarter pressing with high intensity, with the forward line of Emily Hicks, Izzy Wolfe, Jess Smith and Maddie Taylor all putting the Surbiton back line under pressure. Both sides created dangerous threats on goal, with Sophia Colman making some crucial saves in goal. Magpies continued to look dangerous with Holly Hartley driving the right hand-side baseline. Going into quarter time, the score remained 0-0.
Going into the second quarter, the team continued the high intensity with Hartley, Maya Christopher, Ellie Brine, Beth Gardens, Sarah Brook and Cherry Seaborn all working tirelessly in the midfield. Magpies continued to create a number of chances with threatening runs from Hicks high up the pitch. Following a great ball from Gardens and carry from Hartley, the ball fell to Christopher at the top of the D. Finding the back of the goal through the near post with a strong strike, giving Magpies a 1-0 lead going into half-time.
The team remained composed on the ball when starting the second half, Surbiton continued to show their attacking skills, gaining possession and testing the defensive line of Magpies. But Jess Chater, Lauren Barber, Lucy Walton and Jess Lamprell, saw to any threats and kept calm, whilst also offering support going forward. The link between Gardens and Seaborn throughout the midfield continued to break Surbiton lines and create attacking chances. The scored remained 1-0 at the end of the third quarter.
Magpies started the last quarter strong being awarded a penalty corner within the first few minutes, which they were unfortunately unable to convert. Magpies continued to look very dangerous going forward when a very well timed pass from Seaborn found Hartley out wide enabling her to carry down the right before crossing the ball for Hicks to put into the goal. Give Magpies a 2-0 lead. Magpies maintained their strong press and remained focus to prevent any threat from the opposition, leaving the final score to be
2-0. Player of the match was awarded to Coleman for her amazing saves and great composure in goal to keep a clean sheet.
