Our match against Dereham was played away, late afternoon and the weather was nice and sunny. However, a road blockage before Watton caused a few of us to drive off into the Norfolk countryside but the match started on time. The first half was enjoyable although Dereham had very experienced players and an early short corner. Rosie Baynes, voted Player of the Match, ran out first and thwarted their attack on goal. However, despite many shots at goal being saved by Peg Bridges, a strike was successfully made. Soon after, we were awarded three short corners in a row, struck by Joanna Meyer to Shirley McAllen who smashed the ball home on the third go.
At half time we were pleased with our score draw of 1-1 but were reminded to be more vocal and to use two hands on sticks for a tackle. So, the second half began with Zara Broadley, who made some excellent runs, passing out to Lilly Graziani, already sprinting up the right wing yet the Dereham defence were strong and outmanoeuvred our forwards. They had several short corners, blocked by our defenders, yet managed to score four goals purely by striking at our goal. The game had changed, and Dereham were showing their strength despite some great effort from the youngsters in our team.
Score: 1 - 5
