Nuneaton Away 4-2 WIN

Under the scorching sun with temperatures soaring above 30 degrees, Telford and Wrekin's second team embarked on what promised to be a grueling encounter against Nuneaton's first team. Recognizing the challenging weather conditions, both teams wisely agreed to play in quarters, allowing for essential fluids breaks throughout the match, a decision that was warmly welcomed by all players.

Telford received a boost with the return of key players, including the defensive stalwarts Bully and Will L, along with Tom C taking his position in goal coming to us from the third team. From the first push back, it was evident that Telford was determined to assert dominance once again.

In a burst of energy within the first five minutes, Tom Jones delivered a thunderous strike into the dee, where Jon C managed to get the faintest of touches to guide the ball into the net, giving Telford an early 1-0 lead. The precision and teamwork on display were commendable.

Nuneaton, despite their status as the first team, struggled to mount any significant attacks against Telford's well-organized defense. Luke S, Will L, KEEBLE, and Bully formed an impenetrable barrier, calmly thwarting any advances from the opposition. 

Telford continued to press forward, and their second goal came in quick succession. Tom Jones, the provider once more, set up Owen for his first goal of the day. However, it was becoming increasingly apparent that the sweltering heat was taking a toll on the intensity of Telford's play. The playing surface resembled more of a UK beach than a hockey field, adding to the physical demands of the game.

Nuneaton managed to pull one back, but their goal was shrouded in controversy. A 50/50 challenge within the dee led to the umpire awarding a dubious penalty corner to Nuneaton, which they somehow converted following a frantic scramble in the dee. This decision left Telford players scratching their heads, but it also served as a moment to regroup and discuss tactics during the much-needed drinks break.

Telford returned to the field with renewed vigor, and Owen continued his excellent performance by scoring his second goal, this time assisted by Jon C. The midfield quartet of Sammy, Matt HM, Luca, and Cal N displayed remarkable endurance, tirelessly covering ground despite the oppressive heat. 

Tom C made a crucial save when a Nuneaton player found himself unmarked at the back post, preserving Telford's lead. As the first half came to a close, Telford held a 3-1 advantage, a testament to their resilience and skill.

The second half introduced fresh challenges for Telford, as they not only faced Nuneaton's 11 players on the field but also had to contend with questionable umpiring decisions. One such decision led to a short corner and a yellow card for Cal N, reducing Telford to 10 men, and allowing Nuneaton to narrow the scoreline with their second goal.

Despite these setbacks, Telford persevered and continued to display superior gameplay. However, frustrations mounted as the umpiring decisions appeared inconsistent, leading to heated exchanges between the two teams.

Sammy was a standout player, demonstrating controlled aggression and a knack for penetrating the Nuneaton defense. Telford earned several short corners but struggled to convert until Matt HM delivered a stunning reverse strike that found the back of the net. Although the ball sailed above the backboard, the goal was awarded.

Jon Perry, Jon Cook and Josh S played pivotal roles with their selfless runs, both creating space for their teammates and making crucial defensive recoveries when needed. 

The champagne moment came when the umpire gave a short corner from and infringement that took place outside the 25, yes Luke may have been inspired by the opening weekend of the Rugby World Cup by clotheslining the player but by no means was this a short corner! the umpire even told by his fellow umpire and clubmen refused to change his decision. 

Special acknowledgment must go to Sam, who managed the team effectively throughout the match, ensuring they stayed focused amid the challenging circumstances.

The game eventually concluded with Telford securing a 4-2 victory, reaffirming their dominance. This win bodes well for the upcoming league season, where Telford 2’s are set to face Lichfield thirds away from home.

In recognition of his outstanding performance, Sammy was rightfully awarded the Man of the Match title who finally shows controlled aggression on the pitch!!!!! Additionally, Amanda Skye deserves special mention for her thoughtful act of leaving the game momentarily to purchase ice lollipops for the team, providing some much-needed relief from the scorching heat. Her gesture epitomized the team spirit and camaraderie that defines Telford and Wrekin's second team.
