CUWHC Season Report: December 2024

CUWHC has had a brilliant start to the season, aiming to carry momentum from last year’s successes - in particular from the WBlues into this year. Pre-season started early at the beginning of September to provide plenty of preparation for the year ahead. A total of 69 goals were scored across the club in pre-season friendlies, highlights included the WBlues’ 6-0 win against UCL and Nomads 5-0 win against Nottingham.

The WBlues have had a storming start in their National League debut, winning their first game 5-1. They also won convincingly against Oxford Hawks, Birmingham University 2s & Beeston 2s. They now sit confidently at 4th in the table with only 1 point separating each of the teams above them. This is even more impressive given this is the first time the WBlues have made it into National League.

BUCS Prem presented a challenge for the WBlues, placing them in the league with 8 of the top uni teams in the country. This was always going to be a challenge, especially with long mid-week away days, but the WBlues have taken on the challenge valiantly, such as only 2-0 losses to Durham 1s and Edinburgh 1s.

The Nomads are having a brilliant season so far, remaining unbeaten in East League Div 1, topping the table with an impressive 27 points and a goal difference leagues above freshly relegated Dereham 1s. 6-0 wins have become a regular occurrence for this team, aiming for promotion into the East Prem. Various motivation tactics seem to have worked for this team, including the possibility of Katie Wakefield (famously a centre-back) going up front if they get to 5-0 up, and the ultimatum of no night out if they don’t win. So far these are working. In BUCS the Nomads have only suffered one loss, an unlucky game against Birmingham 4s. However, this was redeemed with a 2-1 win away to them only a few weeks later. Under the watchful eyes of coaches Chen & Frankie and captain Emily May, the Nomads are proving their skill & resilience week on week.

In East League Div 2 NW the Beds are sitting comfortably mid-table with 3 wins, 4 draws and 2 losses. They started off the season a little rocky with a close loss to CoP 3s, but as the team bonded they began to not lose anymore, but they also didn’t win… With 3 coaches, the Beds have begun to climb the league table - winning their last 2 games. Captains Alicia McDowell & Emily Dobbie say that they still haven't quite figured out how to score from shorts, but they are excellent at stopping them - successfully defending over 10 against newmarket. An exciting rest of the season lies ahead for the Beds, there’s no stopping their winning streak now!

Following back-to-back promotions over the last 2 years, each with over 100 goals scored, the Rovers are now only 1 league below the Beds. This presents the challenge of the toughest opposition the Rovers have faced so far. With a win over Pelican’s 2s and a draw to St Neot’s 2s they hope to improve on other games to secure their place in this league for next year. As in most years the Rovers are typically made up of lots of first years, so I am sure with more time playing together, under excellent coaching, they will continue to improve and make progress in the league.

Overall the club is in extremely good stead for a great season, with full squads of 16 every week and all four teams going from strength to strength. I’m excited to see what we can achieve in the remainder of the season.
