Wanderers Season Report 2023/24

The Wanderers have performed well throughout the season in both their BUCS league and East Hockey Men’s League, as well as in the annual Varsity Match against Oxford. This year’s team was young, with six undergraduate freshers in the Varsity squad bringing raw talent and enthusiasm. These new players complemented the seven returning Wanderers who brought experience to the side, as well as two other returning CUHC players.

Facing a tough challenge in their East Hockey Men’s League with a third of the league facing relegation, the Wanderers survived this battle to remain in the league next year. The team finished with a balanced 10 wins, 10 loses, and two draws. Highlight matches included drawing with the league’s eventual winners, a 6-0 win over Cambridge Hockey Club, and a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Ipswich Hockey Club in a relegation battle for the last game of the season.

The Wanderers faced more of a challenge in their BUCS League after being promoted last season. After many hard-fought games, the team finished with two BUCS league wins over Oxford 2s and two draws with Nottingham Trent and Loughborough. In the BUCS Men’s Midlands Conference Cup, the Wanderers bowed after the second round, after a win over Oxford Brookes 2s and a walkover against Loughborough.

The annual Varsity Match between the Wanderers and Oxford 2s proved to be a stalemate until the final whistle. The Wanderers went up early after scoring a drag flick courtesy of Freddie McElwaine-Johnn, only to concede a drag flick in their own circle later in the game. The match remained at 1-1 after 70 minutes, so shuffles were needed to determine the winner. The Wanderers lost the shuffles by one goal, ending a nail-bitingly close match in the harshest of ways for the Wanderers.

The Wanderers coach, Dr Sam Grimshaw, has put countless hours and incredible effort into developing the team this season, and the team is incredibly grateful for his unwavering support
