With the excitement of both Welcome Drinks and Halloween this week, I’m split for choice on what to write about. They are both extremely important topics to cover in a weekend preview and each deserve their own. My conclusion: do both.
To start off, since it is first, here is what freshers might want to watch out for this weekend.
I won’t disclose how you are chosen but over the past 3 years, 4 people have ended up bald after welcome drinks. Here are their wonderful aerodynamic heads:
2. Getting hit by a car
Anon. now at Deloitte had quite an interesting night, despite not even being welcomed. At 22:43, Flanman texted: “since when was Harrold such a bad bloke”. He then asked: “what is all that beeping outside my window?”. Clarkey replies at 22:44: “Harrold just got hit by a car”. What a night. Harrold thought it was so funny that he proceeded to do it again! Don’t worry we won’t ask you to be hit by a car, just stay alert at all times!
3. Ending up on a motorway
Two freshers were sent to Girton bar last year to get a drink! They unfortunately missed the bar and “overshot” Girton. Not sure how that happens? Hope we find them soon!
Anyways, as you can see, Sunday night wilby a night from which you can tell many stories for the rest of your life. Hope you have your best parrot outfit, Squock will love it. Be silly, be smart.
And here comes the second (and slightly longer) part of my email. It’s about now that costumes need to be ordered (you don’t want a wandies 2023 repeat), perhaps these wilby a bit of inspiration to help you decide. I will now rate every halloween outfit over the past two years, how fun! (please don’t get annoyed, they’re all great! 🤥🤥🤥🤥)
2022 Halloween Outfits
Wandies - Protect the President 6/10
Get down Mr Pritch, another Fresher has attempted to shrimp you! Luckily, the club captain/wandies captain/ex social sec/ex ex social sec had a team of 15 bodyguards to protect him. What an amazing idea, I wonder who came up with it (hint this was the height of his Wandies career). While the outfit is genuinely just black tie (and the reason for this was because it was left really late), the idea gives it more points. Some Wandies really got into it, I wish I could remember who but fairly certain one of them was Chen. Regardless, this gets a solid 0/10 for effort, 8/10 for idea and 7/10 for execution. (I know that makes 5/10 but it didn’t feel like a 5/10)
Nomads - Fairies 6/10
Very simple, very effective. This isn’t groundbreaking stuff, but it definitely, definitely is not the worst. Not much more to say really, just a simple idea pulled off really well! Unfortunately, I can’t find a photo for this one but I promise it was good!
Beds - Characters from Toy Story 5/10
Quite simply, I don’t think ideas where everyone comes as their own character works that well. The best ones are always in the exact same costume. I don’t remember this one and I think it shows that it wasn’t one of the bedst. Sorry Fran! See beds instagram for photos
2023 Halloween Outfits
Mblues - Spice Girls 8/10
An outfit that could definitely go wrong, definitely did not. Incredible commitment and really well pulled off. Extra points for getting Jbar to sing White Flag, great moment. The matching hats and eyeliner is incredible. Big fan of this one and of the Bereals from the swap!
Wblues - Shrek 6/10
I don’t remember seeing a lot of Shreks, but the ones I did see had great commitment. Full face paint and everyone in the same outfit is great and defo should put them up there in the top 10!
Wandies - Minions 8/10
While it can be argued this is an unoriginal idea (largely because the Squandies did the exact same thing before), the last minute outfit came out incredibly well. The infamous Tiktok shows how naturally the wandies managed to fit the vibe of minions. Extra characters meant this was not just the squandies outfit of last year. I really enjoyed Sean’s cameo in the despicable me movies tbf. Logan as Gru was perfect and they definitely stole the show on Halloween that year!
Nomads - Chilly’s 8/10
I have actually no idea where this idea came from. Yet, it was great. On the more expensive side, this outfit was a commitment yet it was a commitment that was worth it (used at varsity as well). I don’t think there is much to say apart from the fact that this is just a good standard outfit!
Squandies - Things 9/10
What an impeccable outfit, with plenty of thought and effort. Things 1 through 16 (and cat in the hat) was quite simply a stroke of genius. I say this because I painfully made the outfits on adobe express. Images of men in red tops and blue wigs marching into Jesus in a line were quite funny and the fact that we seemingly gravitated towards each other in Jbar was even better. One small caveat, the rovers still had no idea who the Squandies were. The albeit hilarious concept of only referring to each other by the number on a thing’s shirt meant someone genuinely referred to me as thing 1 a few weeks later. Zimmy Zimmy, Thing 3 Thing 3 was great and the consumption of more microplastics than ever before was even better. Yet, that one small caveat stops the 10/10 as well as the achievement of top spot.
Blundies - Spidermen 7/10
Incredible commitment - incredible matching outfit. The best costumes are always those with everyone wearing the exact same thing. Pulling off the spidermen pointing at eachother picture added a certain extra touch that definitely gets extra points. Despite the sheer fact that this is a great outfit, there was one large issue. Very similar to that of the squandies. The blundies never took off their spiderman masks. This became a glaring issue when the team they swapped with managed to leave the swap not only knowing 0 new names, but also 0 new faces. The blundies once again slipped under the radar.
Rovers - Curry King 7/10
A theme to do with Cambridge always goes down well. We all adore curry king, I think? Executed well, with some curry and some naan. Had a great swap with the squandies. Overall, a great costume that is definitely up there! I can only apologise that you didn’t actually meet any of us and also for the amount of vet related chat from one corner.
