Goalscorers : Nigel Gadsby 2, Ben J, Raphael Z-F
The sixth team's charge at the summit continued after a hard fought local derby win against South 5s. This , despite fielding the most inexperienced team this season including 6 under 15 players and missing the midfield engine room of Tim Ireland & Nigel Anns, and no Rod in goal!
Early on the mobility of the hosts was causing problems but, against the run of play, City scored from a well struck short corner deflected in by Ben J. Rumours that he celebrated by cupping his hand to his ear waiting for feedback from the goalkeeper are unfounded. City then doubled their lead when a superb Stephen Graves pass found Rapheal who, buoyed by last week's hatrick, cleverly finished, reverse stick from close range. Half time 2-0.
The city defence was in its usual obdurate mode, Aldous and Willan continuing their good form but it felt as if City needed a third goal to secure the three points. The youngsters were combining well with some excellent counter attacking hockey but it took a Nigel Gadsby short corner strike to extend the lead. The game seemed safe but with 8 mins to go South scored and a tiring City were under the pump. Tim Willan sent off for dissent didn't help but a break away attack in the last minute resulted in a short corner which Nigel Gadsby hammered home to the delight of the many M6 Ultras on the touchline . Despite a last gasp South goal, City held on for a memorable victory. It's too early to get carried away but the league table makes for good reading at the moment with both City sides in the top two.
